WRITING

NEWS

My first love was newswriting, and four years later, nothing has changed. While I’ll never turn down an opportunity to write a creative, emotional feature or photograph our major sporting events, my brain is wired for quick, concise, inverted-pyramid-style newswriting.

For me, it’s the adrenaline rush. The same day story. The scramble to find sources and get quotes. The on-site information gathering. That’s what I live for.

My speciality throughout high school has been newswriting, and it’s the foundation I plan to build on throughout my career.

FEATURE

My relationship with feature writing grew more slowly than my love for news, but it’s become just as meaningful. Feature writing has become a way for me to slow down and dive into the creative side of journalism. I get to lean into the quotes, the stories, the emotions, rather than just the facts.

Telling a deep, meaningful story grounds me in my love for journalism. Yes, this job is about getting stories out quickly and being on the scene, but it’s also about showing your audience a deeper look at humanity.

Now, some of my favorite works are longer, expressive feature stories.

OP/ED & REVIEW

Though it started with TV and movie reviews, my opinionated writing has evolved into much more (well, kind of). What began as critiquing storylines and performances grew into discussions of current events shaping our world.

And my favorite part: having a voice.

I spend most of my time showcasing others’ stories, but opinionated writing allows me to connect with my audience in a deeper, more personal way and take a stance in my own way.

SPORTS

Sports has admittedly not been my main beat. However, covering sporting events on camera and in my broadcasting work has allowed me to capture major events and emotions that matter to my school and community.
