SOCIAL MEDIA, MARKETING & AUDIENCE ENGAGMENT
Starting over on an entirely new publication didn’t just mean we had to establish a new staff and website; it also meant we had to establish ourselves on social media.
With zero followers in July of 2023, we began posting our story teasers, which attracted students and community members to not only our social media accounts, but also to The Wingspan.
Since then, we’ve incorporated more consistent posts, like our Weekly Rundowns and Question of the Week videos, that keep our following steadily growing and engaged.
But we also use social media as a tool for change. Whether that's to advertise yearbooks, spread the word about game themes, or encourage others to sign up for blood drives, we use it to raise awareness of community events, student news and engagement.
Now, we have amassed over 1.8k followers on Instagram, 1.4k on Facebook, 900 on TikTok and 300 on X. Our website has also seen steady growth in readership.

STORY TEASERS
To increase our readership and exposure, I introduced “story teasers” in our first year. With some updates aesthetically, we’ve steadily kept up with posting them for the past three years. Posted on Instagram and Facebook, these quick posts allow us to advertise our work on the platforms that get the most views. Each story teaser receives, on average, 1.3k views. This has drastically increased our readership on the Wingspan, and I attribute much of our stories’ virality to them.
WEEKLY RUNDOWN
Every Monday morning since The Wingspan began, we’ve posted a “Weekly Rundown” of events and activities happening that week on Facebook and Instagram. We also include the weekly lunch menu.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Each week, we post a “Question of the Week” video. While the primary goal is to entertain, we still try to find timely, important questions to ask to remain journalistic.
